How Machines Trust Strangers Every secure connection rests on certificates — documents one party issues so another can verify a third. This site explains certificate chains, authorities and the padlock in your browser.

What Intercertificate Does

How Machines Trust Strangers

About digital certificates and trust between parties: how TLS certificates, certificate authorities and chains of trust let strangers' machines verify each other.

🔐

TLS Basics

What the browser padlock proves — and what it does not — in plain language.

🏛️

Certificate Authorities

The organizations everyone's devices already trust, and how that root of trust is guarded.

⛓️

Chains Of Trust

Root, intermediate and leaf certificates: how one signature vouches for the next down the chain.

⏰

Expiry & Renewal

Why certificates deliberately die, and the automation that renews them before outages.

🪪

Beyond Websites

Certificates for email signing, code signing and device identity — the same trust, different jobs.

🚫

Revocation & Failure

What happens when a certificate is compromised — revocation, mis-issuance and the famous failures.

How Intercertificate Works

From signup to value in 3 steps

1

Anchor at the root

Devices ship trusting a small set of root authorities — every verified connection traces back to them.

2

Follow the chain

Each certificate is vouched for by the one above it; validation walks the chain from leaf to root.

3

Keep certificates alive

Automated issuance and renewal keep short-lived certificates from becoming outage dates on a calendar.

Frequently Asked

What is a digital certificate?

A signed document binding an identity — usually a domain name — to a cryptographic key. A party you already trust signs it, so you can trust a party you have never met.

Why do certificates expire?

Deliberately short lives limit the damage of stolen keys and force fresh verification of ownership. Automation makes the churn invisible when it is set up well.

What does the padlock actually guarantee?

That the connection is encrypted to the domain named in the address bar. It says nothing about whether that site is honest — trust in the operator is a separate question.
